History

Education in Jamaica was introduced in the 18th century by Christian Churches establishing schools to give basic literacy education. Secondary schools on conventionally English pattern were established during the 18th and 19th centuries by Trusts to educate European creoles and near whites. in the latter part of the 19th century, the Government began to take an active interest in education. A Public Education System was devised patterned on the English structure. In more recent times, the Government's regard for education for all citizens increased as they regarded education as an individual right and a means of developing the potential manpower of the country.
